How to Style for DummiesI've wanted to be that stylish dude that swaggers across the street, but I always thought that money was what was holding me back or genetics. But turns out that wasn't it. I just wasn't educated to find the right clothing to look better. So I have written a how to style blog below to help you become an attractive dude.
DISCLAIMER: Before I educate you, remember that everyone has their own individual sense of style. Don't wear anything to impress anyone else but yourself. And rock the piece that you love with confidence and your shoulders held up high.
What makes this guy look so stylish? A simple tee. That's right! All you need in your wardrobe are basics. In this decade, minimalism has taken the men's fashion by storm in the streets and in the runways. So if you are scratching your head on what to wear in the morning. A simple tee and some jeans will take you from a slob to a stud.
Color Blocking (AKA Matching)
Did you wonder how the person on the right pulls together all those colors in one outfit? Here's how. Its color blocking. To match your clothing take a look at the color wheel. What you can do is look at which colors are across from each other on the wheel and match those two colors together. There! You got yourself a stellar fit. However, some people aren't as bold with their choices. So, if you want to not stand out as much you can try matching earth tones with one of the brighter colors. Some examples: pink and black jeans, white and blue jeans, etc. Sometimes if you are having trouble, a good rule of thumb is to use Pinterest or google images to find your favorite celebrity and match like they do. This is almost equivalent to having your own stylist like they do!
Pants & Shorts
The biggest flaw in many men's fashion today is not genetics but the fit of your pants. Take a look at your pants right now (that I hope you are wearing). I am 100% sure that your pants are either too big or too tight. Remember that normal retail stores that sell pants and shorts that are made for the "general public". This means that they make pants to fit everyone, so they make the most money. So make sure to either tailor your pants to fit you or get a fit like skinny or slim to make it taper and hug your body. That's what makes the person on the right look like a boss on with his jeans. From your shorts to your sweatpants, they all need to fit. Fit is King! It makes or breaks your entire outfit.
Two things to keep in mind when buying pants or shorts:
1. Make sure it fits perfectly
2. Pants go to your ankles and Shorts go above your knee
Note: If your pants don't fit length wise or are too baggy, try doing the pinroll (Google it) with your pants. If it's your style, try it. When the store opens, all our pants fit amazing off the rack.
You know those basics that I was talking about? They aren't only useful in the summer, but also in winter! The biggest bang for your buck. This is because in order to make yourself look stylish you must start off with a base layer with a basic (aka a solid tee). After that you can layer with a jacket, hoodie, bomber, denim jacket, or flannel. Sometimes if your outfit is color blocked you can put a flannel on top of the hoodie (a current hot trend). At UrbanFits, we have many different layering pieces.
Note: Leave all of these items open (unbuttoned or unzipped) on top of your base layer.
Some people overlook this aspect of your style but it really can make or break your look. The first step to having a good hairstyle is to find your face shape: rectangle, oval, square, heart, triangle, round, or diamond. Usually, each face shape has a hairstyle which brings out your face the best. For example, a heart, diamond, or square face shapes you need to have a hairstyle with short sides and back while you need a high volume hairstyle like the picture on the right. However, if you have a round or oval face, you should for a hairstyle with less volume on the top. Below are some examples of hairstyles that would suit your face shape.
Round: Pompadour or Side Part
Oval: Pompadour, Side Part, or Quiff
Square: Undercut, Quiff, or Side Part
Heart: Side Part or Quiff
Triangle: Textured pompadour, Curly Top, or Quiff
Round: Side part, French crop, or Pompadour
Diamond: Messy Fringe or Wavy Side Part
I bet all of you have heard of the Supreme, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and all the designer stores. You may have been told that's what you need to be a "stylish person" but that's not true. See the person on the right. He looks great right? What brand is he wearing? We don't know. But we can strongly say that he looks like a stylish dude. So, remember try to buy clothing that doesn't have huge logos on it (You'll look like a walking billboard) and it doesn't make you look stylish. However, it does make you look like an infant when it comes to style. Remember buy simple clothing that doesn't put their brand on their t shirts to elevate your look. Also, don't go out and spend over 100 dollars on ANY clothing. There are always great options without big price tags like at our store.
After your face, the next thing that people look at are your shoes. Shoes are actually really simple but everyone thinks they are super complicated. Just remember minimal shoes beat everything. The cheapest sneaker options would be your Vans (Old School & Slip-ons) and Converse (Low and High Top). Some more classy shoes would be your chelsea boots or combat boots. These would be for more dressed up locations but these could also be dressed down into streetwear. If you are feeling courageous in style, a great rule of thumb is to look at the number of designs on the sneaker. If there is more than one design, you should rule it out because it looks sloppy. For shoes, don't spend over $60 dollars because there are some options that can become super expensive even though they offer the same quality as lower priced products.
Yes. Men have accessories too. But remember minimalism is key. Let's start of with rings. Rings should have really simple designs, usually just one color. If your sense of style is rings, make sure to have only one on at a time because it can start to look clunky. Next, there are earrings. Usually, when it comes to earrings, they must be kept simple and small for it to look great on men. Another accessory would be a watch. Never be caught without wearing a watch. People perceive you as more punctual, more mature, and more stylish if you wear a minimal watch. It is one of those pieces that can take your simple outfit to the next level. Same thing with necklaces. Necklaces can be used but only one at a time. Rule of thumb: only a small pendant. When wearing it make sure to put it on the outside so it can elevate your outfit. Lastly, you have hats. Only solid colored hats would work but do not wear it every day. You want everyone to see your beautiful hair. Take a look at our store we have all the accessories you need.
This topic is so misunderstood among men that it needs its own section. If you can't grow a beard or mustache that connects both sides of your face, your best bet is to do the clean shaven look. It will never go out of style and people will perceive as a trustworthy person. However, if you can and that's your style, you should maintain a ten-day stubble so that it will bring more definition to your face (sharper jawline). If you are doing this make sure to keep your mustache equally as balanced as your beard so your face looks more proportional and overall one badass dude.
We're all guilty of gaining some weight during quarantine. But that's no excuse to be laying on the couch and binging your favorite sitcom the entire day. Get Active! The Harvard Medical School says you have to get at least 30 minutes of high-intensity workout a day to be healthy. Something I recommend is downloading an app called Shred on the app store. It a free app which lets you focus on your fitness goals. It has exercises for everyone: skinny people, regular-sized people, and buff people. It will show you at home workouts to reach your fitness goal. Besides you'll start to fit better in your clothing.
Note: Drink a lot of water!
